Girls softball season comes to a close
With the girls softball season coming to a close, head coach Kevin Dunn feels that it has been a successful one for his group of girls. The team finished strong against Papillon South in the District final and really bonded together as one.
“It was really a highlight to see how the seniors improved from past years and helped with the younger players,” Dunn said. “We also beat several very good teams this year and were much more competitive with some of the top teams with chances to beat several of them.”
Carlee Guyett, Senior at Westside and captain of the softball team this year led the girls by making sure they stayed on task, while having fun at the same time.
“For the first time ever we did a freshman initiation this year,” Guyett said. “We had eight seniors and five freshman this year and we “kidnapped” them, it was a fun night. It was really interesting to see how the freshman interacted with the upperclassmen.”
Although the team did not accomplish their goal of taking state this year, they worked hard throughout the year and were happy with the results they received.
“We played Papillon South for our first game in Districts and they beat us by quite a bit, the score was 10-2,” Guyett said. “We then beat the 4th seed in the loser’s bracket, Omaha South, 15-0. We then played Papillon South again and we were really ready for this game, we played really good defense but our offense was just not there. We lost 5-3 and did not qualify for state.”
The team will continue to train over the offseason in preparation for next year.
“Even though we had a lot of seniors play this year we got a chance to use a lot of younger players throughout the season as well and that will help with next year as they will have to step into key roles,” Dunn said. “We will look at trying to have our players be more athletic by changing our off-season training.”
