Freshman returns from year in Europe
August 31, 2016
Living abroad and traveling the world is an opportunity that few get to experience in their lifetime. Freshman Harper Gordman and her family got to experience this adventure when the Gordman family moved to Spain from the year of June 2015 through June 2016.
“My whole family moved to Spain to learn spanish and to travel around Europe,” Gordman said. “We wanted to become immersed in the culture,” Gordman said.
Although the move to Spain was a chance for the Gordman family to experience a new lifestyle for a year, it was not all fun and games. Gordman and her younger brother, Zev still attended school. They went to an international school filled with kids from all around the globe.
“We went to [the] Benjamin Franklin International School. It was an American based program but with a lot of international students,” Gordman said. “I liked that a lot of it was outside, but I didn’t like the academics. They were really weak. I didn’t learn that much, but I like meeting kids from all around the world.”
Although the move to spain was difficult at first, Gordman learned to love it.
Because of the school’s differing form of education, the curriculum was easier for Gordman and allowed frequent school breaks. This way the Gordmans were able to explore in Europe, which was their main focus. They went to over 20 countries, and numerous major cities.
Gordman wrote about her adventures on her family blog, “There are so many incredible things that we’ve done and places we have seen, but it’s so difficult to put it all into words. I’ve just really been trying to live in the moment.”
