REVIEW: Dunkin Donuts vs. Krispy Kreme
On a busy morning before school or work, Westside students tend to stop by two well-known franchises for a coffee or donut fix. The famous, “Krispy Kreme vs Dunkin Donuts” feud has been going on since the beginning of time, and we’re here to put all debates to rest. We decided to buy two items, a caramel iced coffee with cream and a glazed donut from each doughnut shop, to taste them and decide who is the true donut dominator.
When comparing the end product of each chain, they are not very similar. Both chains use an almost entirely different recipe to create their own unique pastry. One of the main variations between the two shops is price. For Krispy Kreme, the original glaze runs about 99 cents and assorted donuts run about $1.09, depending on where you go. Iced coffee will set you back about 3 dollars for a small. For Dunkin Donuts, all donuts are 99 cents and Iced Coffee is about 2 dollars.
Both chains argue that they power hard-working Americans in the morning with sugary drinks and pastries. While both are filled with sugar and fat, Krispy Kreme is a bit healthier at 190 calories for an Original Glazed Donut whereas Dunkin Donuts is 260 calories for a glazed donut.
For someone who likes black coffee and lighter, more airy donuts, Krispy Kreme is the way to go. Krispy Kreme’s portion sizes are smaller and offer a healthier choice for a breakfast meal. If you don’t care about nutritional value, Dunkin Donuts is the better choice. Their donuts are a lot thicker and have much larger portion sizes with lower prices.
This feud between the two Donut giants is a complicated one. Both chains aren’t very similar but have a loyal fan base that will stay true to their favorite. The only major differentiation between the two is price point and the different make-up of the donut exclusive to each chain. After doing this review, we ended up choosing Krispy Kreme as the victor for donuts and Dunkin Donuts for the winner for coffee. Similar to our last review, we based our choices on overall quality, price point and taste. Out of the three of us, we were unable to declare an official winner, so go try them both and decide for yourself.
