REVIEW: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
After DC Comics’ competitor, Marvel, released “Avengers” in 2012, DC has now released its equivalent superhero movie series. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” attempts to connect a new universe to recreate the same success Marvel has had.
At the beginning of the movie, along with the well-known Batman origins story, Bruce Wayne is caught in the middle of a battle between Superman and General Zod in Metropolis, the climax of the Superman film, Man of Steel.
18 months later, Superman has been given both praise and criticism from the American public. Bruce Wayne’s distrust for Superman also brings tension between Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, who publishes slander against Batman and his endeavors in the Daily Planet metro newspaper.
The two superheroes eventually battle, but compromise to save Kent’s adoptive mother from the evil and deranged CEO, Lex Luthor. Luthor also creates a horrible monster that has the power to destroy the city of Metropolis if Superman and Batman can’t stop it themselves.
The film doesn’t bring too much new to the table in comparison to others in the superhero genre. What it does extraordinarily well is deliver dialogue. The tension between Superman and Batman, as well as their alter egos, can be felt in almost every scene the two share together. The actors were also very convincing.
Like many extended universe narratives, “Batman vs. Superman” has plot holes and irrational story errors. Without spoiling the movie, it is really hard to explain these errors but at the very least it is safe to say some of the solutions to the problems the heroes face aren’t very practical in the long run.
“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” isn’t exactly perfect or even remotely flawless, but it does open up to a new story arc for the DC superheroes that apart from Marvel’s “Avengers”, hasn’t been seen in worldwide theaters. That all being said, moviegoers should enjoy as it is and hope in anticipation for next year’s “Justice League”.
