Teachers take on the “Relay Across Nebraska”
March 17, 2016
Whenever someone hears about a runner finishing a 5k or a half marathon, it’s hard for them to imagine how someone can run for such a long period of time. Westside’s very own math department decided it was time to step up their game and show everyone what they are capable of. Math Instructor Beth Peitzmeier is captain of one of the teams running the “Relay Across Nebraska.”
“The first team to complete 540 miles wins,” Peitzmeier said. “We went from the Wyoming side of Nebraska to the other side and whoever lost had to make the winning team dinner.”
The race includes a variety of exercises, so even if you’re not too big on the whole working out aspect of the competition, it can still be fun. If you’re a person who likes to hit the slopes, you can ski for one hour and that would count towards your mileage. Some of the other workouts include 20 minutes of swimming, 30 minutes of lifting, running one mile, etc.
“There are 16 teachers involved and they are split up into three teams. The three captains are myself, Mr. Stevens and Mr. Long,” Peitzmeier said.
The goal for this “relay across Nebraska” is to increase daily exercise in teachers’ lives in a fun way. It is also something to get their minds off all of the recent drama with budget cuts and to do something other than grading the never-ending piles of homework assignments.
Peitzmeier was very happy with her team’s performance as they finished first in the relay with Stevens and Long’s teams trailing behind them. The teams are all still happy after eventually reaching their goal of 540 miles and they did it in a fun way.
