PREVIEW: Girls basketball looks to repeat at state
After a pressure filled season and a tough district playoff, the girls basketball team is back at the state tournament to defend their title. The team is the sixth seed going into the tournament and will face Millard West in the wildcard game. This will be the second time the teams play each other this season, last time ending on a buzzer beater from sophomore Quinn Weidemann to secure their wild card spot.
Since the team won their last game against Millard West, the game plan is the same, spread the floor and get the ball in the paint, then work it outside to the shooters. One big key for getting through Millard West, and the tournament, is to keep players fresh throughout the game.
“We want to keep running and use our bench,” Clark said. “With teams that don’t sub often you really want to push it and keep our girls fresh and get theirs tired.
As well, according to Clark every team that goes to state not only needs their starters to perform well, but a role player to step up and be an X factor. Clark doesn’t know who that is for Westside yet, but is confident the team will step up to the challenge.
Should the Warriors win, they will more than likely face number two seed Fremont, then the number one seed and number one team in the state, South Sioux City. Although, anything can happen in the state tournament, which is what the team is preparing for.
“Whatever comes, we’ll take,” Clark said. “Whatever challenges come up, we’ll just be glad to take them because that means we’re still playing.”
Hopefully, Westside will keep playing and defend their title. Good luck Warriors!
