New food hall introduces unique, innovative dining options

The days of chowing down on a Whopper or Doritos Locos Taco at the mall are long over. After years of planning, Westroads Mall unveiled a new food hall on Tuesday, Dec. 29 under the name of Flagship Commons. Flagship Commons, which is located in the former T.G.I. Fridays, is now home to eight local eateries including Aromas Coffeehouse, Amsterdam Falafel & Kabob, Blatt Beer and Table, Clever Greens, Juan Taco, Weirdough Pizza Co., Yum Roll and Yoshi-Ya Ramen.

The food hall provides options to even the pickiest of eaters and its fresh food, comfortable seating and interior design have developed a unique atmosphere that’s unlike any food court Nebraska has seen before. Before you head out to try the food for yourself, Wired’s here to give you an overview of three of the restaurants and give you an idea of what you should (and shouldn’t) order.

Aromas Coffeehouse

_MG_2229 copyWhile Aromas is new to Westroads, the local coffee shop has been a part of Omaha for over five years with locations in both Benson and the Old Market. When I approached the shop at Flagship I was initially excited by the fact that they serve Ted-N-Wally’s and Tea Smith. However, I vowed to try something new, so I ordered a mocha and lemon poppy seed muffin. I would say the prices were reasonable as my total was nearly $8, which is around the same price I would pay at Starbucks or Scooters. Now to the food, I can start off by saying that mocha tasted perfect. I wouldn’t classify it as unique, but it certainly fulfilled my expectation of being a sweet, creamy coffee drink. As for the muffin, it was definitely bursting with lemon. The lemon flavor was strong, which I loved, but I’d only recommend it to those who also love lemon. My only complaint with Aromas is that the muffin wasn’t as moist as it should’ve been. Overall, my experience at Aromas was delightful to say the least and, because of their friendly employees and fair prices, I would prefer it over a chain-coffee shop any day.

Yum-Roll

_MG_2207To start off I can say that one of the most impressive aspects of Yum-Roll was their use of technology. With each order customers are able to enter their phone number so that they can receive a text for when their order is ready. I was also impressed with how quick my order came out considering that they make everything fresh to order and it was around lunchtime. Everything leading up to trying my order, which was avocado rolls, was spectacular. The presentation of the dish, friendliness of employees and portion size exceeded my expectation. However, I was quite unimpressed with the rolls. To say the least they were very bland and the rice seemed overcooked. I left quite disappointed, but later decided that everybody, including Yum-Roll, deserves a second chance. Later in the day I gave Yum-Roll another shot by ordering a side of edamame. In short, the restaurant redeemed itself as I found the edamame to be delicious and perfectly seasoned, but may I warn you that it is quite spicy. While my experience at Yum-Roll wasn’t great, I will give them credit for moving through the line quickly and serving food that’s fresh.

Weirdough

_MG_2187As I was walking through the dining area deciding where I should try next I immediately stopped as I had a whiff of freshly baked bread. As I approached Weirdough I saw the ovens where the smell was coming from right in front of me. Knowing that the food was going to be fresh, I decided to hop in line and check out their menu.  Their options were quite limited, but included unique specialty pizzas such as “Meat and Potato”, “The Northerner” and “Pistachio”. In an attempt to try something unique, I went out on a limb and ordered a slice of pistachio pizza. A single slice of pizza rang up to $5, which isn’t much more than the prices of Sbarro, the pizza place in the old food court, but still fairly expensive for a single slice. Then after waiting five minutes, the cashier handed me a massive, fresh out of the oven square slice of pizza that looked quite appealing. It not only looked good, but the combination of flavors and cheeses made its way to be one of the best slices of pizza I’ve ever had. While the pizza was quite delicious, it didn’t taste much like pistachios, which may have been due to the strong taste of arugula. Regardless, the flavor combination made the pizza flavorful and unlike the typical red sauce and cheese pizza most of us are accustomed to. Overall, I would highly recommend checking out Weirdough and if you want to go a little out of you comfort zone, then without a doubt be sure to order the Pistachio.
