PREVIEW: Girls basketball begins new journey after claiming state title

Girls basketball is starting back up at Westside, but the girls started preparing for the season long before the first game. With a state championship title from last year, expectations are high for the team.

The players have been training since the summer. They worked on specific drills to help with different aspects of the game including lifting and workouts with a physical trainer every Tuesday and Thursday.

The team has core values that they follow to hopefully lead them into another successful season. The core values are: heart, competition, composure and reliable. They use these values during practice and during school everyday.

“The goal is to follow our core values, if we follow them how they should be, then we definitely have a chance make it to the state championship,” senior Lynsey Curran said.

A few of the key players this season are Curran, sophomore Quinn Weidemann, who had made varsity as a freshman last year, senior Maya Solarana and senior Bridget Mizener. They have a new player too, junior Ravionne Pullum, a transfer from Millard West.

“We have high expectations [for the season],”  Curran said. “What we’re focusing on is not talking too much about last year, we have a new team so it’s a new journey.”

The first game is Thursday Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. against Lincoln Southeast.
