Accepting refugees at this time is a bad idea
The Syrian refugee crisis is a very concerning current event in the global community. Though there is not a completely viable option to solve this issue, I would suggest that for the time being, we should not accept them in our country.
The huge migration of Middle Eastern refugees came after ISIS pushed them out to go west and into Europe. Many European countries have embraced the arrival of the refugees with open arms, but by doing so they allowed a minority to retaliate against western society using violent means.
I am sure everyone is aware of the Paris attacks that resulted around 130 deaths of innocent people. Without dispute, this was an organized attack by eight ISIS members, who could have been traveling to Europe at the same time the refugees came in. Is this a risk worth taking for Americans?
If we were to receive refugees, we would need to be very cautious of who gets through. Extremists are a minority in Islam, but with so many people, there is not an accurate way to distinguish who has views that are anti-American or are simply followers of radical Islam.
The Refugee Act of 1980 allows up to 50,000 refugees per year to be taken into the American homeland. Each year we receive thousands of refugees, but with this crisis, I can only see us accepting a few more.
Notably, Nebraska’s stance along with half the states in the Union is opposing amnesty to the Syrian refugees. Though states don’t get much say of who gets through, I think that shift should occur. The west coast and northwestern states on the other hand have supported letting in the refugees.
I hope for the best of all the families fleeing Syria, but we need to uphold national security before we can allow so many people from a foreign land to join us in our mission to fight terrorism.
