Preview: The Road to State Begins
Westside Varsity Football has been working towards the goal of state all season this year. Their hard work and consistency has come from long hours of practice, film watching and teamwork.
Coaches and team have been focusing on the plays that Papillion LaVista could run, while focusing on the tactics to defeat them. For tonight’s game, Papillion LaVista sits with a 6-3 overall record, while Westside is 7-2 overall.
While tonight’s game is sudden death, Westside hasn’t changed their routine of plays. They have however emphasized getting third down conversions more consistently. Head coach Brett Froendt’s main focus is coming up with a strong game plan for tonight’s game, as well as counting on every playmaker to take their play up a notch.
“It’s playoffs and the playmakers need to step up to make their plays. We have a lot of seniors on the team so it would be disappointing if we don’t have a lot of kids step up and play their best, so I fully expect that and am excited to see that happen,” Froendt said.
Senior Jack Connelly, wants to make sure that the team works on having the other team have less than 50% for third down conversion or two take always per every game, but the team is focused on strategies of winning.
“He [Coach Froendt] basically has a new game plan for each team each week whether they’re a passing team or a running team, he just does a great job of knowing what they’re going to do and how we’re going to defend it.”
With the game-plans and mentality set for the team, they are confident they can advance to the next week of playoffs.
