PREVIEW: Football looks past injuries to win this week’s game
Westside Varsity Football has been working towards their first game since the beginning of the summer. Their hard work at morning practices every day for three months will finally be shown at this week’s first game.
Despite sudden injuries that have come up during practices these last couple of weeks, the football team is confident they can achieve their goals for the year.
Last year, Varsity Football fell short of making it to state against Millard West. With majority of the starting team returning for this upcoming season, the team’s goal is obvious, make it to state and win state.
“Our goals this season are to be a vocal, physical/aggressive, high-tempo team, work hard and together as a “unit”, and to win a state championship” said senior team captain Jack Connelly.
Head football coach Brett Froendt agrees that they will definitely be missing a few seniors from last year. However, he is confident that the team is well equipped and talented enough to replace them and do pretty well.
“You always miss some talented players but I think we have some kids that stepped into those roles and can do a great job,” said Froendt.
The two captains this year, Connelly, and senior Jacob Kent want to make sure that their final year is a good one. This year they are being more vocal, assertive leaders, and making sure that they are serving as role models for the rest of the team.
“We do the best we can to make sure every practice is a great one because we strive to be a great team” said Connelly.
The Warriors are excited to take on Bellevue West this Friday at 7 p.m. at home.
“It is hard to predict which teams will be our most difficult games but we plan on playing each game with the same focus and intensity,” said Connelly.
