PREVIEW: Girls Golf Loses Some Players, Looks to Stay Solid
Last year, the Westside girls golf team qualified for state and placed tenth in the tournament. With
a majority of their top players returning, team hopes to finish better than a year ago, despite losing some players.
“I think this year we will have more goals set for ourselves and take practice more
seriously,” Senior and team captain Claire Nelson said.
Having lost one of the teams key players, Clair Selby, Coach Barry Glanzer believes
in order to continue their success, they will need to improve their
putting and short games, as well as continuing to practice their long range shots.
Although the team lost two seniors and a couple
others, the new team captain, Nelson, is confident the underclassmen and new teammates have a promising future.
Even with the new team, Glanzer still aims to qualify, and do well in the state tournament.
“Obviously one of our goals for this season is to get back to state. Of course it is
going to take a lot of work to get there and every game we play counts” Glanzer said.
Another goal for upcoming season is to improve team chemistry.
“After being on the team the past three years, I have noticed how important it is to
have team bonding,” Nelson said.
The girls team will compete for the first time this year in an invitational at Holmes Golf Course, Thursday Aug. 20.
