After five months of retreats, choreography sessions, and daily rehearsals, the Amazing Technicolor Show Choir (ATSC) was named Grand Champion, along with winning the award for best vocals and best choreography at the Viterbo 101 show choir invitational at Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Saturday, Jan. 10.

ATSC won this competition two years ago and have placed in the top three at that contest for the past five years.

They performed their 17 minute long show, including five songs ranging from Glee to a new twist on an old classic, Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash.

They performed twice over the weekend. The first time was for the preliminary round composed of 12 different show choirs from across the country. The top six scoring groups from the preliminary round performed a second time for finals.

ATSC was one of the show choirs to move onto finals. It had the highest scores of the day, and was defending their first place scores with their finals scores.

“There’s always that feeling of knowing that you were supposed to come in first and you come in second,” choir director Doran Johnson said. “I was very relieved to see that we were able to finish on top.”

This was ATSC’s first competition of many, and Johnson sees this upcoming season as being a successful one.

“This is a group that doesn’t rest,” Johnson said. “They keep looking ahead. They keep trying to see what they can do better. It’s a group who knows they haven’t arrived.”
