Two years ago, the girls swim team won the state tournament at the Bob Devaney Center in Lincoln. Last year the girls placed fifth at the state tournament, and junior Elizabeth Amato-Haner took gold in backstroke and 200 freestyle events at the tournament. The boys placed 15th at the state tournament last year.

“It’s always fun to watch people get best times and improve throughout the season, but as usual I am looking forward to people doing good at state” Assistant Swim Coach Nick Joslin said.

At meets, the dive scores and swim scores are combined for a total team score. The dive team this year has a new head coach, Aja Worth. There are five divers this year that will be compete in a number of tournaments throughout the season. Diving is looking to improve this year after no individuals placing in the top 16 at state last year.

In contrast to diving the relays have done well at tournaments. A few individual swimmers also place highly at meets.  This year key swimmers are Elizabeth Amato-Haner, Grace Porter, Paul O’dell and Ashley Wigness. There are also lots of young swimmers on the team this year that have a lot of potential.

This year the boys and girls swim team, coached by Doug Kreklow, started the season with two-a-days.

The invitationals are important meets this year. Westside holds their own invitational on January 30th here at Westside. Big rivalries this year are Creighton Prep, Marian, Millard North, and Elkhorn. The team’s first swim meet is Thursday, Dec. 4 at Westside High School against the Elkhorn Antlers.
