BASEBALL RECAP: Team recovers after a rough start
Update: As of Thursday, April 3 at 11:35 a.m. today’s game against Papillion-La Vista South has been postponed. The game has not been rescheduled.
At the start of the baseball season, the Warriors did not hit the ground running. Friday, March 21 was the opening game for the then-No.1 ranked Westside against then-No. 2 Millard West.
The Warriors got off to a solid offensive start, leading 6-0 at one point. The fourth inning for the Warriors was riddled with errors, letting Millard West back into the game as it scored four runs to cut the deficit to two, 6-4. The Warriors could not respond, and in the fifth inning Millard West scored another four runs, giving them the lead 8-6. Though the Warriors tried to make a comeback, they were unsuccessful as the game ended 9-7, Millard West. The Warriors committed six errors on the game.
“Yeah we were always disappointed because you try to win them all, but we want to be the best at the end of the season,” varsity baseball starter senior Drew Fitzmorris said.
The doubleheader the next day was canceled due to rain, giving the Warriors time to recoup.
Friday, March 28 against Lincoln North Star yielded a big victory for the Warriors as they shut down North Star 4-0. The next day the Warriors faced Omaha North and showed similar strength, winning 15-2 with 12 hits. The team showed poise as it limited its errors to two.
“It was nice to get a win underneath our belt,” varsity baseball starter Jake Meyers said. “It builds confidence.”
This week Westside will be facing three more games in a row, Thursday through Saturday, after the two home games it already played, last Tuesday and Wednesday. These five games in a row will force Westside to manage its energy efficiently.
“Going back to last summer, as the summer season is always a bit more strenuous, the work ethic we brought to those games was always focused and intense,” Fitzmorris said. “We are bringing back a lot of the same guys from last year.”
Westside started its 5 game stand strong, beating Lincoln Southeast 5-2. It continued its momentum Wednesday, April 2 against Ralston, winning 15-0.
Looking forward, today, Thursday, April 3 Westside will be playing at Papillion-La Vista South. Then it will be playing Bellevue East and No. 8 Millard North Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5 respectively. Monday, April 7 the team will play Omaha Northwest and then at No. 5 Millard South Tuesday, April 8. “You can’t overlook any game, but, to be honest, we are worried about today’s [Papillion-La Vista South] game,” Fitzmorris said. “Papio South has great coaching and they always come to play.”
