Wrestling Recap: Winter Break through Jan. 9

After two meets during Winter Break, the Warriors are beginning to find its stride. Dec. 21 they had a meet against Wahoo, then at Creighton Prep this past Sunday, Jan. 5 and capping it off with a dual at Papillion La-Vista high school Tuesday, Jan. 7.

At the Wahoo invite, the team finished sixth place overall, with five medalists. The medalists were senior Dylan Sorrell, who placed fourth in weight class 120, sophomore Drew Sorrell, who placed third in weight class 103, junior Joey Wiles, who placed third in weight class 113, senior Brady Novak, who placed third in weight class 170 and senior Ismail Hamze, who placed second in weight class 182 for the best finish on the team.

At Prep, things were much tougher, but three Warriors were still able to medal. These were Drew Sorrell placing fourth, Novak placing fourth, and Hamze placing third for the best finish for the Warriors again.

At Papillion La-Vista, the team dominated. They first went up against TJ High School and won 57-13. After a break, they went up against host school Papillion La-Vista, and were victorious again, winning 62-13. With those two scores, the Warriors were undefeated and won the meet.

Overall, head coach Mike Jernigan is still pleased with how the team is progressing.

“Right now we have some sickness, we have some discipline issues, so we’re down quite a few starters, but we’ll get everyone healthy and ready for metros,” Jernigan said. “I’m really looking forward to what the rest of the season holds for us.”

The Warriors next meet will be at Millard West on Jan. 11, its final one before Metros on the 17th and 18th.

Notes:

Dylan Sorrell and junior Doug Flakes suffered concussions over the break. Flakes is already back with the team. We will keep you updated on Sorrell’s status.
