Winter Sports Preview

While the fall sports season has not yet ended, and the winter sports season has not officially started, Westside Wired and the Lance teamed up to bring you an early preview of the season.

Below you will find out how the teams did last season and what to expect from them this season. Make sure to read the Lance’s Winter Sports Season Preview in issue three, which came out today, for more details on the “thing to watch.”

Boys Basketball

Last season: 11-12 record. Made it to first round of districts.

Key players returning: Senior Michael Kiger, senior Kevin Metoyer.

Thing to watch: New transfers from Prep and Papillion-LaVista South.

What to expect: The team has all the necessary pieces and should make it to the early or middle round of the state tournament.

Girls Basketball

Last season: 13-11 record. Lost in the district championship.

Key players returning: Mallory Thompson, Jay Bridgeman

Thing to watch: Starting center was injured during the offseason.

What to expect: The team has more experience than last season, and should be able to get past districts and into the middle round of the state tournament.

Boys and Girls Swimming

Last season: Fifth at metros, 10th at state for boys. Third in metros, sixth in state for girls.

Key returning swimmers: Boys: Senior Sam Kupka, junior Paul O’Dell. Girls: Senior Savanna Couillard, senior Hannah Miller, sophomore Elizabeth Amato-Hanner, sophomore Grace Porter.

Thing to watch: Teams will be without longtime head coach Doug Krecklow for the early part of the season.

What to expect: For the girls, a top five finish at state. With Amato-Hanner, one of the top female swimmers in the state last season, and Couillard, the team has experience to place well at state. For the boys, a top 10 finish, with the help of O’Dell and Kupka, two of the top backstrokers in the state.

Wrestling

Last season: 3-11 record, 27th at state.

Key returners: Senior Brady Novak, senior Dylan Sorrell, senior Ismail Hamze.

Thing to watch: The team is looking for more support from Westside students.

What to expect: With a few experienced seniors leading the team, they have a chance to place better than last season.
