Burrito Mile
Running a mile alone can be difficult for some. Try scarfing down a burrito right before running that mile. As a fundraiser for the Westside cross country teams, runners were challenged to go do just that on Saturday, Oct. 26, when Westside cross country hosted the fifth annual burrito mile.
Separated into three heats — girls, boys and adults — each runner is given a burrito and their time starts. The time of the race includes eating the burrito, so runners try to eat their burrito as fast as they can.
“The girls took forever eating their burrito,” said boys cross country coach Derek Fey. “Probably the longest collective group eating ever.”
After finishing their burrito, the runners start the mile with a full stomach. The record time is held by John Miller, who ran the race in a time of 6:27 while competing in the adult category. The winners for the boys and girls heats are below.
Girls: Mariah Tessin – 11:37.
Boys: Stuart Willet – 6:47.
