Westside vs. Millard South Recap
On Friday night, the Westside football team showed just how good they are. Playing against the No. 10 ranked Millard South Patriots, the Warriors scored a major victory by a wide margin, winning 47-0.
The No. 2 ranked Warriors started scoring with 5:04 left in the first quarter, as senior Christian Hagan hit a 37-yard field goal. After a Warriors defensive stop, senior Jamaal Conway-Smith came up with huge punt return, giving the Warriors the ball on the Millard South 30. But, on fourth and two, the Patriots defense came up with a stop.
With the ball on their own nine yard line, the Patriots fumbled, and recovered the ball in their own end-zone, resulting in a safety, putting the Warriors up 5-0 with a minute left in the first quarter. On the kickoff from the safety, senior Malek Pittman returned the ball for a touchdown, putting the Warriors up 12-0.
Then, senior Lane Yates, who finished the day with 17 carries for 143 yards and one touchdown, carried the ball 72 yards for a score, putting the Warriors up 19-0 with 8:27 left in the first half. Two minutes later, senior Luke Biggs caught a 45-yard touchdown throw from Hagan, who finished the game 15-23 for 251 yards and three touchdowns, putting the Warriors up 26-0.
After a Millard South three-and-out, Westside drove down the field with the first half winding down, but Hagan, who was 1-3 on field goals for the night, missed a short field goal with 15 seconds left in the first half.
After the half, Westside got back to business. Millard South went three-and-out, then Hagan missed a 52-yard field goal. But, the Warrior defense came up with a big play to get the ball back to the offense. Senior Drew Fitzmorris recovered a Millard South fumble at the Patriots 39 yard line. After the fumble recovery, Hagan connected with Conway-Smith, who caught eight passes for 138 yards and a touchdown, for a 39-yard touchdown pass, putting the Warriors up 33-0.
The Warriors scored twice more, on a 13-yard Hagan to Pittman touchdown throw and on a throw from back-up quarterback sophomore Mitchell Hagan to junior Drew Combs, making the score 47-0.
Head coach Brett Froendt said the Warriors played their best game of the year, and had high praise for the offensive line.
“We clicked on all cylinders,” Froendt said. “We had a lot of people make plays. All of our playmakers stepped up and caught balls, but more importantly, our offensive line played fantastic. Millard South brought a lot of pressure on defense and our offensive line picked everything up. [They] gave Christian an opportunity to find his receivers, and he hit them.”
The offensive line played well even without starting right guard Henry Dobson, who was out with a leg injury. To overcome the injury, senior offensive linemen Tom Young moved from left tackle to right guard, and junior Connor Flairty came in at left tackle.
“Really, I just miss Doby [Dobson],” Young said. “It’s not my natural spot, but it’s what Blevs [line coach Shawn Blevins] thought was best, and I guess it worked out for the best, so I kind of like it now.”
With three games left to play, the Warriors are 6-0. Froendt said the teams aspirations will keep them motivated for the rest of the season.
“It doesn’t take much to motivate them when you’ve got an undefeated season rolling and you’ve got playoffs coming up,” Froendt said. “State championship motivates a lot of kids and that’s what we’ve got to work for.”
The Warriors go on to play Omaha South at 7 p.m. at Phelps Field for senior night. Omaha South is 0-6 and coming off of a 42-6 loss to Bellevue West.
