Westside vs. Fremont Recap
The No. 2 ranked Warriors came out on top last night, beating Fremont 42-10. On a chilly night in Fremont, the Warriors started slow but were able to pull ahead in the second quarter.
“Well, we came out pretty flat,” said head coach Brett Froendt. “Coach made a stupid decision early, kind of put us into a hole, and that was me. Just came out really flat.”
The Warriors were held scoreless in the first quarter, as Fremont went up 10-0, but the Warriors scored 28 points in the second quarter.
Senior Lane Yates, who went in at running back for the first time since he suffered an ankle injury against Creighton Prep, carried the ball 32 yards for a score with 11:51 remaining in the first half. Yates finished the game with 70 yards rushing on 14 carries, with one touchdown.
Then, after a Fremont three-and-out, senior Christian Hagan, who was 19-25 passing for 212 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception, connected with senior Jamal Conway-Smith for a 14-yard pass touchdown, putting the Warriors up 14-10 with 8:29 left in the first half. Conway-Smith had a huge game for the Warriors, catching 12 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
After another Fremont three-and-out, the Warriors scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Hagan with 4:35 left in the half, putting the Warriors up 21-10.
After a fumble recovery by the Westside defense at the Fremont 31 yard line, Hagan and Conway-Smith connected again for a 13-yard score, putting the Warriors up 28-10 with 1:38 left in the half.
“It’s not necessarily that we played better than Fremont, but over time our talent made some plays, and we made more consistent plays,” Froendt said.
The Warriors scored two more touchdowns, a 35-yard interception return by Conway-Smith with 5:38 left in the third quarter and a 5-yard Hagan pass to senior Drew Fitzmorris with 11:25 left in the game, bringing the score to 42-10, the final count.
Fremont had 177 yards of total offense, while Westside amassed 383 yards.
