Becoming a Superfan
At the beginning of the school year, 58% of the 254 students that voted on a Westside Wired poll said that Westside’s school spirit was below average or worse. Members of the Ethical Literacy club are looking to solve the school spirit by creating the SuperFan Challenge.
“SuperFan is designed to raise school spirit & awareness for all school sports and activities,” said member of the Ethical Literacy Club Amy Kohlscheen.
Becoming a SuperFan is more than just attending football and basketball games. To become a SuperFan, students need to attend a wide range of activities; JV/Freshman football games, softball, tennis, golf, theatre, band and others. There are eighteen activities that students can get a stamp on and four wild card activities. Students need to get fifteen stamps to become a SuperFan.
“By getting [the students] there for the games and having them experience the atmosphere they will realize that they’re supporting their classmates and showing their school spirit,” said member of the Ethical Literacy Club senior Quinn Nelson.
Four of the required stamps are of your choice, allowing students to go to multiple activities if they enjoy watching that activity. Nelson hopes that the SuperFan challenge will get students to come back to multiple games of an activity.
“Once they see themselves supporting their friend in math class, they will continue to show up to the activities which will build community,” Nelson said.
Once getting the fifteen stamps, students will turn in their card to become a SuperFan and receive a t-shirt.
Ethical Literacy Club will be distributing SuperFan cards Friday during lunch mods and at home events.
“If a representative isn’t there you can take a selfie at that event in front of the team or group, then see Mrs. Wegener for the SuperFan stamp,” said Kohlscheen.
