The special education department created a t-shirt in support of the movement to “spread the word to end the word”. Staff members and student volunteers came up with the idea of a mascot for the kids promoting Students Thoughtful Acceptance Respect Friendly Involved Sharing Harmony, or in other words, a STARFISH.
Volunteer Katrina Swanson says “a starfish is the perfect mascot for our kids because they’re strong and happy animals.”
The student volunteers help the kids with whatever work they need help with, and sometimes accompany kids to their classes.
“It has to be your passion. I love to do it and I’ve always known I wanted to work with kids in special education,” said Swanson.
The t-shirts are $10 and can be ordered through Swanson, Amber Clark, or Rita Yasson in room 326.
