Going to the tanning salon has become a regular occurrence for many teens. According to dermatologist Jill Nelson, tanning in a tanning bed just four times raises your chance of getting skin cancer 86%. The Nebraska legislature is trying to pass a law banning kids under the age of 18 to go to tanning booths. Westside Wired talked to the owner of Four Seasons tanning, a popular salon among westside students.
Q:What is your opinion on the possible Tanning Ban?
A: I don’t think the government should dictate who can and cannot tan. Parents should have this responsibility. It takes away my right as a parent to say yes or no.
Q: What are the risks of tanning?
A: Overexposure and burning is what creates the bad cells. In moderation, tanning is better for you.
Q: What precautions do you take?
A: Most parents have been into the salon, and I know its okay with them for their child to be tanning. I also make everyone sign a waiver and I make everyone under 16 have their parents sign the waiver. Other precautions I take is to skin tag everyone. I determine how much exposure to the sun they have had, and if they burn easily. I’m an estition so I know how to properly skin tag someone.
Q: Who do you see overexpose the most?
A: Most of the time it’s adults who over expose more than kids.
Q: Why did you decide to open a tanning salon?
A: I wanted to open a tanning salon so I could have a clean place for people to come too. I also wanted my family involved.
Q: How would the tanning ban affect your store?
A: It would hurt my business, but a lot of the people that come here are over 18. I definitely wouldn’t have as much fun.
