The Grammy are much more than just any other award show. It’s actually just a compilation of mini mind-blowing concerts from the most famous artists of the year, with a few awards mixed in. The fewer amount of awards makes winning a Grammy all that more special. The surprising winners this year included:
Album of the Year- Babel (Mumford and Sons)
Best New Artist- Fun.
Record of the Year- Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye ft. Kimbra)
Song of the Year- We are Young (Fun.)
Even more important that the awards given were the performances. Justin Timberlake came back to the stage after a couple years on hiatus and sang his new single Suit and Tie. To top it off, Jay-Z casually got up from his chair in the front row, grabbed a mic, and rapped on one of JT’s new tracks.
The Black Keys were another big winner of the night, performing and winning Best Rock Performance. For a relatively new band to be nominated in the same category as Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay, the win for them was unexpected.
None of these performances can overshadow the two best performances (in my opinion) of the night. Kelly Clarkson belted out renditions of “Tennessee Walz” and “Natural Woman” to pay homage to Patti Page and Carole King, proving why she continues to win Grammys, because she can actually sing. Lastly, Frank Ocean sang his popular song “Forrest Gump” which may be confusing to some people as to why he would write a song literally just recapping a movie, but nonetheless he crushed it. Also proving why he deserved his two Grammys that night and many other nominations.
