Westside High School recently hosted its annual outdoor track meet, the Westside Invitational, and the team didn’t disappoint. They swept the field, and Westside provided a spectacular display of athleticism and talent that was a harbinger of what seems to be a very promising track season on the horizon. With a number of athletes currently ranking first in the state in their events, the day was a significant benchmark for the team.
Senior Keynan Cotton delivered the performance of the day with a scorching 10.72 seconds in the 100-meter dash, which is now the state‘s fastest time this year. Cotton‘s speed and agility not only won him his race but also generated buzz among the fans and coaches for what he can accomplish as the season progresses. In addition to him, junior Maurice Purify III also excelled, recording a staggering 23-01.25 in the long jump and ending the day with a 100-meter time of 11.26 seconds, making him yet another formidable candidate for state recognition.
Juniors Bryson Williams and Monte Costello also demonstrated Westside‘s prowess in sprinting, with Williams clocking 11.15 seconds in the 100 meters and Costello coming in second at 11.17 seconds. Costello also competed in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing with a good time of 44.11 seconds. Their efforts helped bring about the clean sweep victory of the team, solidifying Westside as a track and field giant this season.
Highlighting performances among the standouts was that of freshman Will Urosevich, who posted an impressive 50.33 seconds in the 400 meters and split a staggering 49.8 seconds in the 4×400 relay. His performance was seen to be awe-inspiring, especially considering his rookie status on the varsity team. His potential has already caused ripples, with high expectations for what he is capable of doing as he further develops experience.
Yet another star athlete on the rise is junior Will Tomcykowski, who excelled in the triple jump as well as long jump. In the triple jump, he went 40-09.00. With an incredible 20-05.50 in the long jump, Tomcykowski has already become one of the state’s finest jumpers. Throughout the year, his play will be invaluable to Westside‘s overall team success.
Far from being forgotten, junior Ryker Jensen showed skill in the high jump with a 6’2″ jump, and senior Davin Wang excelled in the pole vault, reaching 12’00”. Their performance also showcased the diverse talent of the team.
