This week Westside girls tennis has a busy schedule and is getting ready for metros. They have a match against Bellevue West. They have a big tournament with 10 teams competing at Lincoln Southwest. The new coach is bringing a new approach to the team, with a new mindset and environment.
Coach Betsy Kingston is having the girls focus on improving everyday and support. She is building strong relationships with the girls on the team and creating team unity.
“Our team mindset is all about growth, grit, and unity. We focus on improving every day, staying mentally tough, and competing with respect. It’s building strong athletes and stronger character,” said Kingston.
With the tough week ahead Kingston is reminding the team that there is more to life than tennis. As a coach she wants the girls to know that no matter if they win or lose, they still need to support each other and represent Westside.
“Win or lose, we support each other and represent our school with pride. It’s not just about tennis,” said Kingston.
Senior Grace Greenwald is excited for the new environment for her senior season.
“We have a new coach, Betsy Kingston, so I am excited for a brand new environment for my last year,” said Greenwald.
The girls are toward the middle of the season and are going easy on their bodies. Kingston is having them be extra careful with the upcoming meet on Friday.
“We’re focused on smart recovery, proper warm-ups, cooldowns, hydration, and rest. We’re also rotating players when possible to manage workload and keep everyone healthy for the long run,” said Kingston.
The girls are ready to compete against these top teams at Lincoln Southwest. The invite is giving them an idea of what the state is going to look like. Coach Kingston is making sure that the girls are not getting in their head.
“Every match and school provides new challenges and competition but that is the fun part of the sport,” said Kingston.
