Heading into week two of boys soccer, the Westside Warriors are ranked 8th with a record of 2-1. The Warriors opening game was against Papillion La Vista South. Westside couldn’t get many shots to fall, losing the game 4-1. The Warriors then redeemed themselves a few days later beating Millard West 3-2 in overtime. The Warriors third game was this past Saturday at Lincoln East High School. The Warriors beat the Spartans 1-0.
The Warriors recognize that they haven’t played their best these first few games and that there are many areas to improve on. With the sport of soccer, there are many things a team can do to feel like they deserve to win, but at the end of the day it isn’t who plays the best but who can put the ball into the back of the net.
“The first couple games have really been unlucky to say the least,” junior Stuart Berna said. “We have been able to make good opportunities but we haven’t been able to score very much.”
After the first game against the Titans, the Warriors figured out their current strengths and weaknesses which helped them conquer their next games.
“The first couple games for the team have been pretty good, we recognized some areas we definitely need to improve on right after the first game and working on them has led to our last two wins,” senior AJ Pease said.
The boys soccer team changing every single year player-wise, makes it hard to uphold a good team chemistry.
“Our team is building more chemistry currently and trying to figure out how each other plays so we can be at our best.” Berna said.
The boys have also been working on off the ball action in practice.
“As a team we are really focused on timing our runs together.” Pease said.
Berna thinks that with a little bit of practice their team will be great this year.
“As far as the team goes, I think that we are doing fairly well at everything just in need of some adjustments then we’ll be set,” Berna said.
Something that is very important when playing any sport is having a good team atmosphere when on and off the field.
“Something we do really well as a team is having each other’s backs,” Pease said. “If someone makes a mistake we don’t complain we just help fix it.”
