The boys’ track and field team recently kicked off their season with an impressive performance at their first meet, held at the College of Saint Mary. Saying they did well would be an understatement—the team finished in second place, narrowly trailing behind Millard West. This meet not only highlighted the team’s talent and determination but also set the tone for what promises to be an exciting and competitive season.
Despite being the first meet of the year, the team showed no signs of early-season rust, with both veteran leaders and up-and-coming athletes making an impact. Several athletes delivered standout performances in individual events, displaying their speed, endurance, and overall athleticism. Senior Keynan Cotton sprinted to victory in the 60-meter dash, setting the standard for short-distance events. Senior Conor Gross claimed first place in the 800-meter run, proving his dominance in middle-distance competition. Meanwhile, senior Ryan Kugler secured a first-place finish in the 3200-meter race, demonstrating the team’s strength in distance running and its ability to compete across various events.
The relay teams also made their mark with solid performances. The 4×400 relay team placed third with a time of 3:39.82, showing impressive teamwork and stamina in a fast-paced race. The 4×800 relay team secured a sixth-place finish with a time of 9:07.66, a respectable result that will likely improve as the season progresses.
In the field events, senior Connor Wane competed in shot put and placed eighth, recording a mark of 48-02.50. His performance provided valuable points for the team and showed promise for improvement in future meets. The jumping events also saw major success, with junior Ryker Jensen tying for first place in the high jump by clearing 6-04.00 (1.93 meters). Junior Maurice Purify claimed first in the long jump, winning the event with an impressive leap of 23-1.25 (7.04 meters), further proving the team’s depth in field events.
Wane reflected on the meet, specifically his performance.
“This meet gave me the opportunity to see where I stand for the first time this season,” Wane said. “Just being able to get out there and perform helped me get a better understanding of where I’m at, performance wise.”
Beyond the top finishers, many other athletes contributed to the team’s overall success by placing well in their respective events and adding crucial points to the final score. The meet was a clear display of both experience and emerging talent, as senior athletes led by example while younger competitors showed significant potential.
With a strong first meet behind them, the boys’ track and field team looks ahead to the rest of the season with confidence and momentum. If this performance is any indication, they have the potential to compete at a high level and continue achieving impressive results. As they refine their skills and build on this early success, the team’s depth and determination will undoubtedly make them a force to be reckoned with in the meets to come.
The team competes next in the Warrior Invitational at home this Saturday, April 5th. This meet will be a great opportunity for the athletes to build on their strong start and improve their performances. Competing on their home track gives them the advantage of familiarity and support from classmates, family, and friends. With momentum on their side, the team looks to continue its success and push for even better results.
