Junior Manuela Kate has been working on and off the lanes for the past 3 years and has become a leader and asset to the Westside bowling team. Kate joined the bowling team her freshman year for fun during the off season of softball.
Kate talks about her experience on the bowling team and how it has impacted her high school experience.
“My experience on Westside bowling has been one of the best things of my high school career. Westside bowling brings a positive light during practices and games. I have met so many amazing people making great friends.” Kate said.
Head coach McDonald talks about how Kate leads the younger girls through every match.
“She is a vocal leader who leads by example. She does a great job of hyping everybody up and bringing a fun and competitive spirit to our team. She is an invaluable part of our team,” McDonald said.
Freshman Malia Kate talks about what Kate has taught her when it comes to bowling.
“She has taught me how to pick up my spares and when to make a move when going farther into the match. Manuela helps me understand when the lanes are transitioning as the oil is moving within the lane,” Kate said.
McDonald talks about what Kate contributes to every match they have has this season.
“Manuela is a critical member of our team. We rely on her and some of our seniors to really bring it every match. Manuela works hard in practice and in the off season to improve her bowling and it is really showing this year. She works hard to consistently be a high level bowler and her hard work is showing this season,” McDonald said.
Kate talks about what makes her want to keep bowling alongside her sister.
“Just knowing I have a supportive sister always makes it easier to continue this sport. Having her along my side while figuring out what I am capable of helps me reach my highest potential and capabilities,” Kate said.
Kate talks about how she tries to lead the team through every match.
“I try to lead the team during every match by telling my teammates no matter if they win individually by 100 pins or 1 pin they still contributed to the team win. Reassuring that everyone has done their part in the team score helps leadership wise when bowling for bakers,” Kate said.
McDonald talks about how he tries to coach Kate through every match.
“Coach Hogan and I really just let Manuela do her thing. She is an excellent listener and really takes coaching points to heart and works hard to try and correct things when needed. She makes our job as coaches easy. She is a fierce competitor and we just let her go out and compete and it usually turns out in our favor. ‘ Mcdonald said.
Kate talks about how her sister has helped her through every match.
“Manuela has helped me through every match knowing I’ll do great. She also helps me when giving reassurance when I am unsure or confident when coming to my approach to something. Manuela helps me also remember key techniques when further becoming a better bowler. “ Kate said.
McDonald talks about what he likes the most about having Kate on the team.
“I love having Manuela and her sister on the team. They are high level competitors who work hard in the off season and bring a fun and positive spirit to the team. This absolutely makes our team more competitive and it’s showing this season,” McDonald said.
Kate talks about how her bond with her sister has improved through bowling.
“I feel like our bond once started when we started softball. Once Manuela started bowling with the unified program I joined for the experience and really loved it. Both of us having a passion in helping students with disabilities and joining the unified program helped both of us ease into taking bowling as a serious sport.”
Kate talks about her favorite memory on Westside bowling.
“My favorite memory at Westside Bowling is of course meeting so many wonderful people, winning the metro tournament individually my sophomore year, and placing 15th individually in the state tournament,” Kate said.
