The top-ranked recruit in Nebraska, Christian Jones, is a future Cornhusker. Jones made the announcement in September and made it official on National Signing Day at Westside High School on December 4th. The four-star linebacker drew attention from all over the country picking up offers from Oklahoma, Auburn, Boston College and Iowa. The 6’4” senior is ranked as a top 25 linebacker in the nation across many recruiting platforms including 247 Sports and On3. Jones explained why he chose to play for Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule.
“Watching coach Rhule build that program,” Jones said. “He’s really flipping it around, and got a good wave of things going for him, and I want to be a part of that. It’s a dream come true to be a Husker.”
Jones has been the defensive anchor for Westside since he transferred from Omaha Burke his sophomore year. In his two years as the leader of the defense, Jones had 140 tackles including 16 for losses. He also has eight forced fumbles and three interceptions. Jones also plays on offense for the Warriors, where he totaled 643 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. The Warriors finished the season with a loss in the state finals, but to Jones it’s about the impact off the field the Warriors and head coach Paul Limongi have had on him. Limongi was sidelined with a medical condition and didn’t coach in the finals.
“Getting back and learning about coach Limongi is the big thing we all took away from that game,” Jones said. “There’s bigger things in life than winning football games. Coach Limongi has had a big impact on me for my four years of high school, he turned me from a boy to a man real quick with that effort and toughness mindset.”
At the end of the semester, Jones will graduate from Westside and join the Huskers in Lincoln. Nebraska just finished the regular season with a record of 6-6 and Jones will practice with the team in Nebraska’s first bowl game since 2016. Jones is excited to hit the ground running in Lincoln with the Blackshirts.
“I’m just ready to take the next step into college,” Jones said. “Hopefully get to practice in bowl season. New steps in life are coming and it’s exciting.”
Jones says he hopes to bring back what the Blackshirts are notorious for and ultimately reach the goal of a national championship. He will wrap up his high school career playing in both the Polynesian Bowl and U.S. All American Bowl.
