School has started back up again and that means so have fall sports. Girls golf took the district title last season and placed fourth at the state competition. They are coming in hoping to exceed what they finished with last year. One of their star players, sophomore Chloe DiPrima shared what she is looking forward to the most for this season.
“The thing I am looking forward to most this season is being a part of a team with some of my best friends,” DiPrima said. “It’s so fun having been a part of a program with some of the best people and coaches there are, so hopefully we will be able to have a record breaking season and also have fun.”
Head coach Jered Hellman expressed any standout players and their contribution to the team.
“We have three returning players from last season’s team who finished 4th place at State, which is our highest finish in nearly 25 years,” Hellman said. “Sophia Martin will be our senior leader, she had a solid junior campaign worked really hard this summer competed across the country, and has elevated her game, Addie Benge had a great summer and a solid sophomore season and works tirelessly at her game, Chloe DiPrima goes from our talented freshman to her sophomore season with really high aspirations, These three will be our core, and we look to fill in our remaining spots with our returners and possibly some of our talented freshmen.”
Senior Sophia Martin placed top ten in districts last season as did DiPrima. Junior Addie Benge placed top five in districts. Martin explained her goals for this season.
“My goals for the season are to go to state and place top three as a team,” Martin said. “Also to make sure everyone in the team feels like they have people cheering for them while they play.”
DiPrima has been working during the off season. She shared how she thinks she has improved since last season.
“I think I have improved both mentally and physically since last year,” DiPrima said. “I play and practice as much as I can but the most important thing to me is knowing how to control my emotions inside my head.”
This will be Martin’s final season as she is a senior. She expressed what she is looking forward to.
“I am looking forward to spending time with the team and getting to know all the new girls,” Martin said. “I can’t wait for tournaments to start because driving and playing with all the girls is always super fun.”
The golf team has been improving every season and their results keep getting better. Hellman explained what his goals and expectations are for the team this season.
“Our goals are high; we placed 11th at the State Tournament in 2022, and 4th last season, and we look to build on that momentum,” Hellman said. “This group of girls is capable of winning a Metro, District and making a serious run at a state title. It’s going to be an amazing journey, and our school and community will be very proud of the 15 female athletes who represent Westside.”
