Arts For Me is a class offered at Westside for the alternative curriculum students. There are a group of visual art teachers who have the mission of sharing their philosophy approach of teaching adapted art.
Arts For Me is taught by teachers Erin Lunsford and Amber Tomasek. It’s an art program that strives to make students’ experiences unique and exceptional. They also work alongside a guest artist, Therman Stato. Therman has exposed students to new material like glass, aluminum and concrete.
However, Arts for me is more than an art class, it’s a place where students can explore their creativity. Cole Buehring, a student in the class, says it’s one of his favorite classes.
“It’s a class I look forward to going to every day,” Buehring said.
The class works on lots of different projects ranging from glass blowing, to drawing and painting.
“We glass blows anything from metal to wood, it’s really anything you can imagine,” Lunsford said.
Students in class seem to enjoy everything and like the experience.
“I love drawing and painting. It’s my favorite thing.” Buehring said.
Buehring has been in the class for two years and loves seeing his artistic side show.
“I am most proud of my bug art project. It was a little hard but I loved it,” he said.
Buehring especially loves the teachers in his class, he says they are always so nice and helpful to every student in the class.
“I love Mrs. Lunsford and Ms. Tomasek, they are awesome,” he said.
The teachers also seem to love the class, even aside from the art piece.
“The best part about it is just being able to connect with the students,” Lunsford said.
The 4th annual Arts For ME! show is an upcoming event Lunsford is looking forward to.
“I’m excited for the end of the year show in May. It’s a good way for students to show off what they have been working on.
The annual end of the year art show, at the KANEKO, opening night is May 9, 5-7 p.m. The show runs through June 7.
“I’m excited for it and it’s something to look forward to for summer,” Buehring said.
