Westside’s Show Choir program has created quite a reputation for themselves by being finalists at multiple show choir competitions around the midwest.
Varsity group The Amazing Technicolor Show Choir and treble group Simply Irresistible are two out of the three show choirs that students audition for. Both ATSC and SI have done extremely well in the past couple of years, placing in the top three at multiple competitions throughout Nebraska and the midwest.
Junior and ATSC member Eva Hovorka shared what she enjoys most about being on stage.
“When I am on stage performing it feels like a huge accomplishment,” Hovorka said. “I am out there giving it my all, and being able to show people the creation we took months of hard work to create is so inspiring for myself and hopefully others.”
Though Hovorka loves performing, she still faced hurdles throughout this season.
“The most challenging part I think in creating this show was trying to get out of my comfort zone and bringing a new personality, especially in the fruit number,” Hovorka said.
Hovorka expressed that connecting to the judges is important.
“We really have to act to portray the meaning of the number for the audience and judges,” Hovorka said.
Sophomore and ATSC member Carter Pflug mentioned his favorite part of the show includes being supported by the audience members.
“Performing on stage is one of my favorite feelings ever because usually you have a crowd of people who all cheer so loud and it really gets your adrenaline going,” Pflug said.
Pflug sometimes struggles with being nervous before performances, but eventually gets over it.
“Before you go on stage it gets you pretty nervous, but then you start dancing and all the nerves go away,” Pflug said.
Simply Irresistible has consistently placed first in their division as well as made it into finals. Junior Quin Farrington says that SI has made a lot of changes within their group throughout the past couple of years.
“With SI being an all-treble varsity, we face a lot more difficulties when it comes to being known as a show choir,” Farrington said. “But, Mr. Woodin a few years ago decided to change what SI would be and the types of shows we do. Most treble groups lean very heavily into the feminine side of shows, but we don’t.”
Sophomore Leela Mukherjee voiced how SI has created an extremely comfortable environment for everyone involved.
“Everyone in SI is so inclusive and kind,” Mukherjee said. “We always have so much fun at rehearsals and every day we spend as a group is just an absolute blast.”
ATSC and SI will be going to two more midwest and local competitions this season to compete their shows and they hope to finish as champions.
