Mile after mile, run after run, test after test is all a part of Claire White’s typical life. Being named Gatorade Nebraska Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year isn’t a part of her daily life, but that is exactly what the most recent award is for senior Claire White.
The award is given to athletes from all the states for a collective of high level academic performance and athletics. White becomes the first cross country runner from Westside to win the award.
“I think it’s a cool opportunity because you don’t get a ton of recognition as a cross country runner,” White said. “I think in the classroom and going on seven mile runs every day it’s cool to get recognized for putting in all the work in every aspect.”
White has received many achievements in her career, including being a part of the state championship team, a state champion as an individual and being an all-state selection all four years of high school. The Gatorade award going to just one runner a year separates it from other awards, and is exactly why it ranks high on White’s list.
“It definitely goes pretty far to the top,” White said. “I think the state championship might be number one just because how special it was but this is probably top three for sure.
White placed first in the state this season, becoming the first cross country champion in school history. The Iowa State signee maintained a 3.95 GPA and is a member of Red Shield. The state champion also is a member of DECA at Westside. She will leave a lasting legacy at Westside with her records and banner that will be hung in the gym.
“It’s just cool because I see Lademi’s (Davies) up there when I go to basketball games,” White said. “ Knowing that I’ll be up there with her and Cole Peyton and everybody like that. It’s kind of awesome to be able to leave your mark on the school and know that you left a legacy for yourself. It’s definitely going to be cool to see that.”
