With winter sports starting that means wrestling is about to hit the mat. The boys wrestling team placed seventh at state last season with eight state qualifiers and four people ending up on the podium including one state champion. Assistant coach Reed Weber shared what he is looking forward to for this season.
“Every season is a new journey with a new group of athletes that takes on its own form, we do have returning experience in multiple returning state qualifiers with Myers, Sidzyik, Regner, Packett and in 2021 Rasulov,” Weber said. “With this season we are looking forward to seeing how some new guys can do with their chance to compete on the varsity level.”
Senior Broc Regner is finishing the football season and heading straight into wrestling. The heavyweight explained what he is most excited about this season and what his goals are.
“I’m excited to compete this year and eat while the skinny guys can’t,” Regner said. “My goal is to build off last year and go further at state.”
Many seniors left last year including state champion Mikey Myers. Weber shared if there will be any changes or different approaches to be as successful as last year.
“All we ask the team to do is to go out and wrestle with courage, so the pressure isn’t on trying to perform to the same results but to always focus on your next match,” Weber said. “So we will work how we always work and put new guys into our roster and culture while having the returners we have to guide them to be the best team that we can be.”
eWith many new young talents going on the team Regner explained how he will help them as a veteran and senior.
“I will be there for them,” Regner said. “I will also answer their questions that they have.”
Last season the team placed in the top ten for the third year in a row. Westside wrestling has been very successful and Weber explained what the goals are for this season.
“Our goal this year is to be a top 10 team with multiple state medalists,” Weber said. “It isn’t as simple as making it a number, we just want the wrestler to compete with courage and the chips will fall how they fall, the will to prepare to win is what will dictate the outcome.”
