Boys soccer ready to make run in Districts

April 27, 2023

The Westside varsity boys soccer team ended their regular season with a 9-6 record, with their final game being a 2-1 win against Papillion La-Vista South.

The Warriors are coming off a loss in the state championship match last year losing 8-0 against the Gretna Dragons. This season the senior class have made it a goal to make another appearance in the state tournament. Senior Jack Gerard wants to finish what they started last season.

“The goal is our head right now is to make it back to state,” Gerard said. “We have to give everything to finish what we started last year.”

The soccer team will have the district tournament coming up shortly where they hope to continue their run to the state championship. For the senior class a lot is on their shoulders as the soccer season unfolds. Senior Josh Caffey expressed how impactful being a senior is for the team.

“Being a senior has impacted my season because I can now help be a leader to some of the younger players on the team,” Caffey said. “I have lots of experience playing and can use that to help out my teammates.”

Team bonds are very impactful when playing sports, getting to know teammates and learning how to work well together is very important. For the boys soccer team they have never lacked team bonding as they are all close friends on and off the soccer field.

“Our team’s biggest strength is we are very close on and off the field,” Caffey said. “ We work well with each other and are good at taking feedback.”

Westside will open the postseason in the A-2 District against Lincoln Pius X at Phelps Field on Monday, May 1 at 5 p.m. The Thunderbolts enter Districts with a 7-7 record.
