The Westside varsity girls soccer team made it to the semi-finals in the Metro Conference soccer tournament. Westside was the No. 3 seed going into the tournament, which set them up for success and was the highest seed they have ever been since head coach Chris Dunford took over on the sidelines in early 2019.

“We got the three seed for the tournament which was the highest seed we’ve been since I’ve been a Westside,” Dunford said.

The Warriors beat Omaha Benson in the opening round with a full time score of 10 to nothing. Dunford was happy with that victory and it gave the Warriors another home game in the series.

“That allowed us a routine win versus Benson in the first round and gave us another home game,” Dunford said.

After the big victory of the Bunnies the Warriors took on the Wildcats of Millard West, where they pulled a two to nothing victory over the Wildcats. Again Dunford was happy with his team’s performance and how they were able to battle with the Wildcats and pull off the quarterfinal victory.

“In the quarterfinal against Millard West it was a tough battle and a really good win against a team that was 6-2 coming in,” Dunford said.

Westside advanced to the semi-finals against their rival school Omaha Marian. At the end of the shootout the Crusaders came out on top with a 2-1 victory. Coach Dunford is very happy with the growth the Warriors have shown this season.

“I thought we showed some growth as a team and had we been more ruthless in front of goal versus Marian,” Dunford said. “We would’ve had a great opportunity to walk away with a win, But ultimately pushed a good program all the way.”

The Warriors have five games left in the season. Coach Dunford is excited to get it underway and he is hoping to win as many games as possible to get them in good standings before the season is over.

“Our next steps are simple, win,” Dunford said. “We’ve got five games left and need to pick up as many wins as possible,”

Westside picked up two more wins after the Metro Conference tournament. The Warriors rolled past Omaha North 13-0. Westside won their seventh game of the season, when they blanked Fremont 3-0 to raise their record to 7-4.

The Warriors are back in action on Monday, April 17 when they play at Omaha Marian at 4:30 p.m.
