The boys swim team placed third in the Metro Championships with a score of 303 points on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Millard West.

Two Westside seniors stood out at the championships. Texas recruit Nate Germonprez won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Kaden Guzman won the 100-yard freestyle and also captured the 100-yard breaststroke. The Arizona State recruit set a Metro conference record with a time of 55.58 in the breaststroke. Both seniors helped the Warriors outscore the Mustangs from Millard North for third place.

After winning the 100-yard breaststroke in record time, Guzman is very confident about what is next for him at the state championship.

“It was a great race and definitely gave me confidence towards state. Gaining that top spot is a big advantage over my opponents and I will use it as fuel,” Guzman said.

Guzman explains how it is a stepping stone for the boys team to take third place in the Metro Championships and it will help them in the upcoming state championships.

“Getting third is somewhat of a stepping stone for us to move forward into state,” Guzman said.  “The place doesn’t quite matter to us for we know that state is the real stage and the true place to perform.”

The State Championships are next and Guzman wants to put the pedal to the metal.

“Next for the team is to simply just keep the pedal forward,” Guzman said. “This next week is crucial for the success of the team at state. We will start our taper and work on mindfulness.”

The Warriors will be back in action at the State Championships, which will be held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Nebraska on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25.
