February 17, 2023

The Westside girls varsity basketball team came up with their biggest win of the season on Valentine’s Day. The warriors upset No.7 Millard West 47-40 on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

The leading scorer of the game was Westside’s Sydney Hagen, who scored 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

“In the summer we beat Millard West so going into the game we knew we were capable of winning,” Hagan said.”We have been losing a lot so being able to come out of this game with a win meant a lot.”

The Warriors have been practicing super hard and knew that one day all their hard work would pay off.

The score at the end of the first quarter was 10-7 Millard West. The Warriors shut down the Wildcats in the second quarter and only allowed the Wildcats to score two points. Westside led 18-12 at halftime.

After halftime the Warriors came out strong and scored 13 points, but Millard West did not give up. Going into the fourth quarter the score was just a three-point margin. Westside gave it all that they had and ended up winning the game 47-40.

The Warriors also got a strong game from Elaine Wiles, who added 11 points. The senior guard also had two triples from beyond the arc.

“The season has been super fun, a brand new team,” Wiles said.”This season we focussed on learning how to play together and also build up our confidence.”

Westside raised their record to 7-14 this season and with host No. 5 Bellevue West on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3:30 p.m.
