Westside seniors reflect on basketball careers

February 3, 2023

The Westside girls basketball team is packed with underclassmen, with only two seniors on the varsity.

Jenna Brown and Elaine Wiles are the two senior girls, who impact the varsity team. Brown expressed that even though there are only two seniors, they still make a positive impact on the team.

“It’s great being one of two seniors because it has given me a chance to build relationships and find some of my best friends even if they are underclassmen,” Brown said. “It has also allowed me to bring a positive influence to the team.”

Brown is out for the season, due to a surgery she had earlier this season, but Elaine Wiles has shown up on the court being ranked in the top three in multiple categories on the Westside basketball team.

“I’ve definitely had to step up as a leader on and off the court this year,” said Wiles.

In the past few years Wiles was one of the youngest on the Warriors and didn’t get a lot of playing time. Since she is now a senior, Wiles is doing her best to lead the younger girls and make them better.

“My favorite thing about basketball is how much progress I’ve made,” said Wiles.

Wiles has been playing basketball for her whole life and dreamed of playing for Westside. Wiles said that now she is finally here, she wants to make the most out of it.

“I love the new WarSader tradition,” said Wiles. “The WarSader tradition is a fairly new tradition between Marian and Westside, the winner of the game takes home a trophy known as the WarSader. The trophy brings a fun atmosphere to the Marian and Westside game every year. Winning the WarSader twice is definitely a memory I will hold fondly,”

Wiles is not planning on playing basketball in college, but is very excited to attend Colorado School of Mines next fall to study economics or environmental engineering.  Brown will be attending the College of Saint Mary’s to continue her soccer career.

The  girls basketball team will host Elkhorn South on Friday, Feb. 3. Tipoff is  at 5:30 p.m.  The game will be live-streamed on Warrior Television and on YouTube.
