Westside boys wrestling team takes 5th place at Metros

January 20, 2023

The Westside boys wrestling team competed in the Metro Conference tournament at Buena Vista High School on Saturday, Jan.14. The Warriors made a strong showing and finished in fifth place in the team competition.

The Warriors had two wrestlers advance to the finals in their respective weight groups. Seniors Michael Myers and Cannon McCarty have been some of the top wrestlers in the state and they further proved it at Metros. Unfortunately, both were not able to win the matches, but their performances were still impressive. McCarty’s loss came against Millard South’s Josiah Aburumuh due to a pin. Myers’ match went all three periods against Millard West’s Henry Reilly, who beat him on a 6-3 decision.

“For me personally, I don’t think I wrestled my best in the finals,” Myers said. “I was pretty nervous having to wrestle a match that had been hyped up on instagram with the guy who had beat me previously in the season at Council Bluff Classics. For me I feel I just need to get back to just wrestling and stop trying to think as much during my matches.”

For the team as a whole, they wrestled at a high level. The Warriors placed fifth out of the 20 teams in the tournament. Westside finished among the top five in the team standings. 1. Millard South 310.5, 2. Papio La-Vista 196.5, 3. Millard West 166.5, 4. Elkhorn South 134.5, and 5. Omaha Westside 132. Westside wrestlers dominated their divisions, with 9 of the 11 Warriors placing within the top ten.

“I feel like our team performed very well. We had a few of our wrestlers out this weekend but I feel we did well coming in 5th place as a team with who we had.” McCarty said.

Westside’s next wrestling match will be at the Burke Invitational on Saturday. Jan.21.
