Westside’s Kevin Stubblefield is state’s top scorer

December 16, 2022

Since the season opening loss against Lincoln Southeast, Westside has sparked a four-game winning streak with recent big wins against Burke, Norfolk, and Millard South this past week.

Junior forward Kevin Stubblefield has been nothing short of spectacular for the Warriors as he leads all of Class A in scoring with 21-points a game, including performances of 34 points against Burke and 30 points in the win over Norfolk.

“[Coach] Simons always tells me before games to be the best player I can be,” Stubblefield said. “It means a lot to be able to help my team however I can.”

Stubblefield is shooting a wildly efficient 74% from the field to go along with a stellar 60% from three point range.

“Over the summer I worked hard to improve my shot,” Stubblefield said. “I worked on playmaking, finishing through contact, and making layups.”

Westside handled Burke last Friday night 66-50, then carried the momentum into the next day by snagging a convincing 73-56 win at home against Norfolk. On Tuesday night, the Warriors kept their foot on the gas pedal at Millard South on their way to a 15-point victory as they gear up for the Metro Holiday tournament on December 22.

“As the season goes on we need to keep working on being precise,” Stubblefield said. “If we pay attention to detail we’re in a good spot.”

Westside will go on the road this Saturday, when they play at Lincoln Pius X. the Warriors are getting closer and closer to hitting their stride. With injuries hindering the start of the season, as time goes on the Warriors expect to continue to mesh together.

“With guys coming back from injury we always thought this team was one that would improve as time goes on,” head coach Jim Simons said. “I think we’ve played some solid basketball but there’s always plenty of room for improvement.”

Westside and Lincoln Pius X will tip-off at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
