Sophomore Zachary Kastrick poses with his coaches, John Hanssen and John McDonald, after bowling a 244.

Westside’s Zachary Kastrick had a record breaking day on the bowling alley. The sophomore broke the school’s single game scoring record with a score of 244 at West Lanes on Thursday, Dec. 2. This breaks the mark set by former record holder Dominic Vincentini, who scored a 234. Kastrick rolled eight strikes during his record game. Hard work has taken Kastrick to the next level in his game.

“It feels great to be able to say your name has made it on the record wall,” Kastrick said. “It’s definitely one of my best accomplishments by far in bowling. Putting in a lot of work is finally paying off.”

Westside bowling coach John Hanssen has noticed Kastrick since his freshman year. Kastrick’s work on the lanes is what got him this big accomplishment.

“Zach came in as a freshman with a solid understanding and good bowling fundamentals,” Hanssen said. “He works hard to improve the little things that help him achieve higher and consistent scoring. This school single game high record Is a direct reflection of an athlete that has the ability to handle the mental part of the game and transfer it into the physical game.”

Big goals are ahead for Kastrick and the Westside bowling team, but taking it one step at a time will be key.

“Going forward we always take it match by match, practice by practice,” Kastrick said. “We’re going to try to place well in districts, hoping for a state qualification. The record definitely something lots of people want to do. I’m definitely looking to try and break it again.”

Starting the season off with a win was big for the Westside bowling team A veteran team will try and make a big push in the postseason this year.

“It’s always nice to start the season with a win,” Hanssen said. “With so many returning bowlers with outstanding skills and experience, we are deep with talent. We as coaches see even in this early part of the season that we have a team that has the ability to realize many team and individual school bowling records and that we will see new names for many of the all time records on board across from the main gym. The new head coach has done much behind the scenes to set the team up to go far. The athletes know that endgame when it comes to the postseason. This will be our best year yet in so many ways.”

The next meet for the Westside bowling team will be on Tuesday, Dec. 6  at West Lanes against Omaha Westview.
