Football hosts Lincoln Southwest in quarterfinals

November 4, 2022

The Westside football team won their opening playoff game comfortably against Papillion-LaVista by a score of 59-21. Tonight the Warriors will look to defend Phelps Field once more in a second round matchup against Lincoln Southwest. Westside quarterback Anthony Rezac accounted for four touchdowns against the Monarchs and is looking forward to the matchup with the Silver Hawks.

“We’ve really practiced great this week in preparing for the game,” Rezac said. “Everybody’s locked in.”

Rezac put on a show last week, combining for 328 total yards. The Warriors will take a 9-1 record into the quarterfinals and a balanced offensive attack has been the difference this season.

“Following the game plans offensively and defensively that our coaches made for us is important,” Rezac said. “We are going to go hard all the time, and play 100%.”

Lincoln Southwest has a record of 8-2 and is coming off of a 31-17 victory against Millard West last week. The Silver Hawks are led by running back Cal Newell, who is the second leading rusher in Class A. Newell has rushed for 1,428 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. Lincoln Southwest is seeded eighth and will have a challenge ahead of them in the form of the top-seeded Warriors.

“Regardless of our seeding, we know that any team can win on any given night,” junior tight end Trevor Spady said. “The most important game for us is the one we have that week.”

Westside’s been attacking from all cylinders throughout the entire season, whether that be through the air, on the ground, or by special teams. Westside kicker Tristan Alvano set a school record with a 57-yard field goal in the win over Papio. Versatility plays to the Warriors advantage, as does the team’s undeniable chemistry.

“We’ve grown together as a team,” Rezac said. “I’m confident that we can go out there tonight and play our game while sticking to what we’ve prepared for all season long.”
