The top-ranked Westside football team surged ahead in the second half to defeat 8th-ranked Millard North by a score of 35-23 on Friday, Sept.16

There was a point in the second quarter where the Mustangs led 16-7, until the Warriors went on to score 21 unanswered points on their way to a victory.

“We made some defensive adjustments after they [Millard North] went up big,” Westside head coach Paul Limongi said. “At the end of the day, a win is a win especially against a good football team.”

Early in the second half, senior linebacker/running back Curt Cubrich aided Westside in taking the lead with a crucial blocked punt eventually leading to an Anthony Rezac rushing touchdown.

“It felt really good,” Cubrich said. “The punt series before the block I was held and it wasn’t called, so I had a chip on my shoulder to go get that ball.”

The Westside rushing attack proved to be extremely effective, with three different Warriors getting into the end zone. Cubrich and running back Jahmez Ross each scored, while the quarterback Rezac rushed for two touchdowns himself.

“I think we did struggle in the first half, me especially with getting the ball in the playmakers’ hands,” Rezac said. “The coaches made some great halftime adjustments in the locker room, and coach [Craig] Secora called some great plays down the stretch.”

After another gritty, hard fought victory the Warriors improved to 4-0 on the season. The Warriors host Norfolk this Friday and look to remain undefeated.
