The Westside volleyball team started off their season by going 4-1 in the Bellevue West invite. Going into a game against Papillion La Vista, it’s interesting to see how the team improves.

“We are looking to improve in the areas we were weak in the tournament,” assistant coach Krista Filipi said. “We are actually going to run a new offense starting today. Were going from a 5-1 to a 6-2 so that we have a stronger block on the right side.”

Papillion La Vista, who is 3-3, is another team they played over the weekend in the Bellevue West Invite. Westside beat Papillion La Vista in 2 sets, so they know what to expect from that team.

“What we know about them is that they’re good defensively and they have a strong middle,” Filipi said “So we need to hone in on that strong middle and find the open shots on the court and make their defense work.”

Senior captain Destiny Ndam-Simpson spoke on the work they’ve done since the Bellevue West Invite. Although the Warriors are ranked 3rd in Class A, there’s always things the team can improve on.

“Right now we have a lot of stuff we need to rep out,” Ndam-Simpson said. “We have some new people filling into some new spots. Our biggest goal is just to find where we’re connecting the best and then improve connections in other places where we’re not so strong.”

There’s high hopes for the Warriors as they come off a third place finish in the Bellevue West invite. There’s a lot of championship desires at Westside. For Ndam-Simpson, there’s a lot more than graduating with a championship trophy.

“Our team goal is to bring home our first ever state championship,” Ndam-Simpson said. “Individually, this is my first year as a captain at Westside, so I really want to step up as a leader and leave a great legacy behind for people who will be here next year so they can continue to build.”

Papillion la Vista is a team Westside has already played, so they know what to expect. They’ve made improvements since the last time they played, and they’re ready.
