Despite Warrior softball’s struggles, the team stays optimistic

September 12, 2017

The Westside softball season is well underway, and the Warriors are not off to the hottest of starts.  The girls currently hold a 3-10 record with their best win coming in their opener against Omaha North, a 10-0 game that saw just one baserunner out of the Vikings. Their worst loss came from the hands of Elkhorn South, 15-0. Three and ten might look bad, but head coach Kevin Dunn says he isn’t worried.

“Right now it’s just a matter of trying to figure out what the right lineup is and getting some confidence.  Once we really figure out we can play at that level of competition, I think we’ll be fine,” Dunn said.

The struggle isn’t coming from a lack of effort in practice, though.  It has come from not being able to steal close games.  Four of the ten warrior losses have come by two or less runs, and that hurts confidence levels.  Coach Dunn said that winning the close games can be key to a successful team.

“We haven’t been able to finish out games in a tournament.  If you’ve got a young team and they’re winning a lot of those close games, they’re going to gain a little bit more confidence than if they’re finding a way to lose them,” he said.

Although the numbers may not show it now, the Warriors are looking up heading into the second half of the season.
