Boys tennis team hopes for a successful season with new coach and strong work ethic

August 31, 2017

As boys tennis season begins, the players are excited for what is to come this fall. Senior Jordan Rhyner feels confident with the skills and work ethic of the varsity team.

“We have a good team this year, everyone’s really hard working and willing to put in the time and effort to do well,” Rhyner said.

West campus science teacher, Jordane Warkentin, is the team’s new coach. After previously coaching at Midland University and Fremont high school, Warkentin is glad to be a part of the Westside community.

“I’m just really excited to be a part of Westside,” Warkentin said. “I’ve always heard great things about it, but now that I’m actually here, it’s just a welcoming group of people.”

The team has been working hard at practices to prepare for their matches.

“I think that the group of guys that are here have a really good culture about them,” Warkentin said. “I think that they are hard workers and they know that they have something to prove to everybody. They all have a lot of determination to do really well at state and I like that they’re just always coming to practices and matches with a positive attitude.”

Leading up to the start of the season, the boys had been preparing for their coming matches by taking clinics and lessons. During the season, the boys practice and condition everyday after school.

“This year we have more motivation to prove that we actually have a good team,” Rhyner said. “My goal is to make it to the second day at state.”
