This past Thursday (April 20th, 2017), Arkansas carried out its first execution since 2005. The inmate executed was Ledell Lee charged with capital murder 20 years ago. He will not be the last one executed in Arkansas either. He is just one of the eight to be executed in Arkansas over the course of ten days. According to the New York Times this is because one of the three drugs used in lethal injection (midazolam) expires at the end of April. The state of Arkansas is under great criticism and controversy over this decision. After being denied any DNA testing on Lee, one of Lee’s lawyers thought this was extremely absurd. Nina Morrison, his lawyer, believed that it could have proven his innocence as she said in this statement, “While reasonable people can disagree on whether death is an appropriate form of punishment, no one should be executed when there is a possibility that person is innocent.”
