Soccer teams prepare for season with high hopes

March 16, 2017

With a widely known and impressive history under their belt, the boys and girls soccer teams have high hopes for their upcoming season this spring. Both boys’ head coach John Brian and girls’ head coach Nathan Moseley are confident in their teams’ abilities to succeed due to weeks of off season preparation including conditioning, plyometrics and yoga.

“Most of the girls play club soccer at the highest levels,” Moseley said. “We have two teams for indoor [soccer] and we also do conditioning after school.”

Both the teams also are looking forward to building upon an already strong sense of camaraderie.

“Team chemistry so far is superb,” Brian said. “I think our senior leadership is phenomenal.”

By achieving a cohesive team environment, the teams are excited to see how they will be able to compete amongst other schools.

Junior center defender Cara Maynard has been playing on varsity since her freshman year in 2015 when the girl’s team made it to state. She hopes that her team will return again this season.

“I want to make sure the team stays connected and that we all work well together,” Maynard said. “Hopefully this year we make it to state.”

After a surprising upset in the second round of last year’s state tournament against Omaha South, the boy’s team ended their season with a 18-3 record. With a passionate drive to redeem themselves and a plan to stay healthier by treating injuries proactively, this year’s boys’ team has very high expectations in their ability to go far in the state tournament.

Sophomore Ethan Goldner, who earned a starting varsity position last year, is also hoping that the team will return to state again.

“Everybody’s really excited to hopefully make it back [to state] again, and I think that if we make it, then we will definitely approach it differently,” Goldner said. “We will always remember that game against South for the whole year.”

Come out and support the boy’s first game this Friday at 5 p.m. @ Westside vs. Lexington, and the girl’s first game this Saturday at 11 a.m. @ Westside!
